Our yard is very wooded and we have lots of woodland plants, mostly Spring Ephemerals, that grew naturally in our yard.
The best thing about native plants, besides their beauty, is how easy they are to grow. Since they are already accustomed to this area, they tend to be more hardy and require less maintenance once they become established. Many are drought resistant and there are varieties that like anything from full sun to full shade. They also tend to attract pollinators such as bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.
Besides the natives that came with the house, we have started a “pollinator garden” along our garage. We have added native plants in the hopes of attracting more butterflies and bees. The area already had some Hosta, although not native, they attract beautiful hummingbirds.
Where to buy Native Plants
There are many online sources such as Prairiemoon.com and PrairieNursery.com. There are also many local sales this time of year. A good list can be found here:

Lake County Forest Preserves Annual Native Plant Sale
Every year on Mother’s Day weekend ( May 11 & 12, 2019), the Lake County Forest Preserve holds a native plant sale at Independence Grove in Libertyville. They also sell rain barrels and compost bins. For more information, visit https://www.lcfpd.org/plant-sale/
No plot to big or too small
There are native plants that bloom at all different times of the year. If you can’t make it out to the Forest Preserve this weekend, think about attending one of the other sales like Openlands. Or plan for next year!
If are considering seeds, know that many native plants need cold stratification achieved by either planting in the fall or using an artificial method like refrigeration.
Either way, try some native plants in your yard this year!
